The economic backbone of Vermonts past is the family farm. Thousands of farmsteads stretched from the rich fertile riverbottom of the Connecticut River Valley to the vast stetches of the Lake Champlain basin to the classic hill farms. The typical farm of the nineteenth century consisted of 50 to 100 acres with a farmhouse, barn and various sheds and outbuildings. Usually when these farms went out of production, the woodlands would take of the fields and the stone fences (stonewalls) would disappear in the forest. The buildings would slowly decay leaving their stone cellar holes and foundations. Many of these non productive farms became second homes and primary residences for those looking for the resources these farmsteads offered.
The common thread through these traditional farmsteads is the intuitive, logical orientation and placement of buildings and open land. In todays world, these farmsteads are being sort after as the basis for a self sustaining lifestyle. Their fertile soils, abundant woodlands and excellent water sources lend themselves to be the perfect basis for a high quality life in Vermont.
