The typical Vermont farm of today might look somewhat familiar to a farmer from the 19th and early 20th century. The early farmsteads of Vermont were family operations with a strong diversity of agricultural activities for an income stream. A ten to twenty head dairy farm would have been a large operation. As our needs changed so did the scale of farming operations. In the last half of the twentieth century, milking 70-100 head would be needed to make ends meet. This over sizing of the Vermont farm led to the establishment of large industrial farms and the abandonment of the typical Vermont hill farm.
Fast forward to today in Vermont. The last 4-5 years has seen a dramatic increase in the Localvore movement and the development of specialized farm products such as artisan cheese, grassfed beef, natural fiber production as well as CSA programs raising all manner of vegetables. These operations are typically small in scale and ideally suited to todays demands. The rejuvenization of once abandoned farmsteads is making the fields productive again and well as utilizing the woodland for maple sugar production, select timber and firewood. If you are in need of a large scale dairying operation, you will most likely be relegated to a few key regions of Vermont. However, to particpate in the Localvore, self sustaining movement, you can pretty well choose where you want to be. Chances are you will have your choice of several suitable Vermont farms.
