Vermont is a state that is literally bound by water. Over 600 miles of shoreline on Lake Champlain forms our western boundary, while the eastern boundary is formed by the Connecticut River. To the north we have Lake Memphremagog and the southern boundary is formed in part by the Deerfield River. Hundreds of rivers, streams and brooks supply the abundent fresh water for the major waterways. Additionally, Vermont has hundreds of lakes and ponds, that range from Lake Willoughby in the Northeast Kingdom to Lake Bomoseen in the Western side of the state to Harriman Reservoir in the South. All of these water bodies have unique opportunites for recreation, fishing, swimming and boating.
Starting in the early nineteenth century many Vermonters would buy a small lot with frontage on a lake and build a seasonal "camp". Usually rustic in nature, many of these camps have been renovated or replaced over the years with year round residences. Given the hundreds of waterbodies, there is a good chance you can find a waterfront residence to meet your needs.
In addition to the well known lakes, ponds and major rivers, there are many excellent brooks and streams that can provide a wealth of recreational and meditative needs. A great number of properties also have private ponds. As such you might end up buying a waterfront property without ever intending to. I can guarantee you will be pleased with the added enjoyment it will bring.
