In it's simplest form, a sustainable Vermont property is one that can provide for the needs of it's owner on a continuing basis. Generally, this would pertain to renewable products such as firewood and the ability to raise animals and produce. The size of a self sustaining property can be surprisingly small. A 3-5 acre mixed northern hardwood woodlot can easily provide enough firewood for a well constructed residence of moderate size. A couple of acres of open productive land can be more than enough to grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. From there it depends on the specific interests of an owner.
Vermont is very fortunate to have the basic makings of being very sustainable. We have an excellent amount of quality water, fertile soils and a sufficient growing season. Droughts are very rare, and extreme weather events are not common. There are many properties that have had the benefit of recent development and improvements and there are many land parcels awaiting the creative thoughts of a new owner to achieve self sustainability.
