Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States. Not too surprising that the maple is the state tree. The production of maple syrup involves gathering sap by buckets or pipeline from the trees by tapping them. They are tapped in the spring when the subfreezing nights and warm days generates the flow of sap from the root structure to the crown of the tree. It takes 40 gallons of sap to produce 1 gallon of syrup.
Maple syrup production was an important income generator for Vermont farmers. The time of year is typically a slow time for farmers, so it was an obvious activity. The care of the sugarbush was hugely important to insure good production. Today properties that have a concentration of sugar maples that can be developed or have been developed into a sugarbush is highly desirable. Not only is a well maintained sugarbush a beautiful woodland landscape but it can be very profitable as well.
